Korean Pronunciation: Yeon-Gae teul Pattern History: Yeon-Gae [淵蓋] is named
after a famous general during the Goguryeo Dynasty, Yeon-gae So-mun. The 49 movements refer to the last two figures
of 649 A.D., the year he forced the Tang Dynasty to quit Korea after destroying nearly 300,000 of their troops at Ansisung.
Number of Movements: 49 Pattern Diagram:

Step-by-Step Description of Movements:
The pattern
begins when the instructor commands the student to come to attention (cha-ryeot). When given this command, assume an Attention Stance on the X on the AB line, facing D. This is followed by the instructor stating the pattern that the student will
perform (Yeon-Gae teul).
On the command to assume the
ready position (jun-bi), move the left foot to B to form a Warrior Ready Stance type A toward D. Remain in this warrior ready stance type A toward D until given the command to begin the pattern.
When the command to begin the pattern is given (si-jak), perform the following individual movements in sequence. The pattern should be performed according to the Guidelines listed in General Choi Hong
Hi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, and presented in the section on essential points
in performing patterns.
1. Move the right foot to C in a sliding
motion to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing (half facing)
in a circular motion, a low guarding block to D with the reverse knifehand.
Perform this move
in a sliding motion, as well as performing the block in this move in a circular
motion.
2. While pivoting on the ball of the
left foot, move the right foot to C to form a left walking stance toward D, while
executing (full
facing) a high front punch to D with the right long fist.
Perform this move in a slow motion – slipping the right foot.
3.
Move the left foot to C in a sliding motion to form a left L-stance toward D, while
executing (half
facing) a middle guarding block to D with the outer forearm. Perform
this move in a sliding motion.
4. While
jumping toward D (about one and a half shoulder widths), execute an
outward strike to D with the right knifehand. Then land facing toward
D, while forming a left L-stance toward D with the right knifehand extended
(half facing)
to D and the right arm slightly bent at the elbow. Perform this move in jumping motion.
5. While shifting to C and maintaining a left L-stance toward D, execute (half facing)
a checking block to D with an X-fist. Perform this move in a shifting motion.
6. Slip
the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D, while executing
(full
facing) a high outward cross-cut to D with the right flat fingertip. 7. Pull the right foot toward the left
foot to form a left rear foot stance toward D, while executing (half facing)
a downward thrust with the right straight elbow.
8.
Move the left foot toward D in a jumping motion (about one and a half
shoulder widths), landing to form a left X-stance toward AD, while

11. While
maintaining a parallel stance toward D, execute (full facing) a middle
front punch to D with the right forefist.
