        Chung-Jang teul

 

Pattern History: Chung-Jang  [忠壯] is the pseudonym given to General Kim Deok-Ryeong who lived during the Yi Dynasty, in the 14th century.  This pattern ends with a left-hand attack to symbolize the tragedy of his death at 27, in prison before he was able to reach full maturity.

Step-by-Step Description of Movements:  

The pattern begins when the instructor commands the student to come to attention (cha-ryeot). When given this command, assume an Attention Stance on the X on the AB line, facing D.  This is followed by the instructor stating the pattern that the student will perform (Chung-Jang teul). 

On the command to assume the ready position (jun-bi), move the left foot to B to form a Close Ready Stance type A toward D.  Remain in this close ready stance type A toward D until given the command to begin the pattern. 

When the command to begin the pattern is given (si-jak), perform the following individual movements in sequence.  The
pattern should be performed according to the Guidelines listed in General Choi Hong Hi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, and presented in the section on essential points in performing patterns 

1.   Move the right foot to A to form a sitting stance toward D, while executing
 
             (full facing) a high side front block with the right inner forearm
 
             and extending the left forearm to the side-downward. 

2.   While maintaining a sitting stance toward D, execute (full facing)
 
             a high side front block with the left inner forearm,
 
             extending the right forearm to the side-downward. 

3.   Bring the right foot to the side of the left foot to form a close stance toward D, 
 
             while executing (full facing) an angle punch with the left forefist.
         Perform this move in a slow motion. 

4.   Move the left foot to D to form a left walking stance toward D, while executing 
 
             (full facing) a high front thrust to D with the right double finger. 

5.   Move the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D, at the same time
 
             executing (full facing) a high front thrust to D with the left double finger. 

6.   While maintaining a right walking stance toward D, execute (full facing) a front
             strike to D with the right backfist, pulling the left backfist under the right elbow. 

7.   Move the left foot to D to form a left walking stance toward D, while executing 
 
             (full facing) a rising block with the left outer forearm. 

8.   Move the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D,
 
             while executing (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the right forefist.

 9.  While pivoting on the ball of the left foot and turning counterclockwise, move the  
 
              ball of the right foot to C, pausing as the feet face toward AC.  Then move
 
              the right foot to C in a sliding motion to form a right L-stance toward D, while  
 
              executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to D with the outer forearm.
 
         Perform this move in a sliding motion. 

10.  Execute a low front kick to D with the ball of the right foot,
 
              keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 9 above
 
              (an outer forearm guarding block). 

11.  Lower the right foot to D to form a right low stance toward D, while 
 
              executing (full facing) a high front thrust to D with the right flat fingertip. 

12.  While pivoting on the ball of the left foot, place both hands on the floor
 
              toward B to support the body, while executing a high turning kick
 
              to D with the ball of the right foot. 

13.  Lower the right foot to D, and then execute (full facing) a high front punch
 
              to D with the right forefist, pressing the ground with the thumb and 
 
              fingers of the left hand as if to trap the opponent's instep on the 
 
              ground with the left palm. 

14.  Move the left foot to D turning clockwise to form a left L-stance toward C,
 
              while thrusting (half facing) to D with the left side elbow. 

15.  Move the left foot to C turning clockwise to form a left L-stance toward D,
at the same
               time executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to D with the outer forearm.  

16.  Move the right foot to C to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing
 
              (half facing) a scooping block with the left palm. 

17.  Move the left foot to C to form a left L-stance toward D, while executing
 
              (half facing) a middle outward strike to D with the right knifehand. 

18.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise,
 
              move the left foot to C to form a left walking stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a pressing block to C with an X-fist. 

19.  Execute a low front kick to C with the right knee, while pulling
 
              both hands in the opposite direction to the left hip,
 
              as if grabbing and pulling the opponent's leg. 

20.  Lower the right foot to C to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing
 
              (half facing) a middle guarding block to D with the knifehand. 

21.  Move the right foot to D in a sliding motion to form a right L-stance toward C,
 
              while thrusting (half facing) to D with the right side elbow.
 
         Perform this move in a sliding motion.  

22.  While pivoting on the ball of the left foot, move the right foot to D to form
 
              a left L-stance toward D, while executing (half facing) a middle 
 
              guarding block to D with the knifehand. 

23.  Execute a middle side piercing kick to D with the right footsword,
 
              while pulling both hands in the opposite direction to the left side. 

24.  Lower the right foot to D to form a right rear foot stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a pressing block to C with a twin palm. 

25.  Move the right foot to C to form a right walking stance toward C, while 
 
              executing (full facing) a high front block to C with the right 
 
              outer forearm.  Then, while maintaining a right walking stance 
 
              toward C, execute (half facing) a high side strike to C 
 
              with the right backfist.
 
         Perform both of the techniques included in this move at regular speed. 

26.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to D
 
              to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing (half facing)
 
              a high front thrust to D with the left flat fingertip.  

27.  Execute a low front kick to D with the right foot, bringing
 
              the right finger belly on the left backhand. 

28.  While pivoting on the ball of the left foot and turning counterclockwise,
 
              move the right foot to D to form a left walking stance toward C,
 
              while thrusting (full facing) to D with the right back elbow,
 
              placing the left side fist on the right under fist.
 
         Perform this move in a slow motion – sliding the right foot. 

29.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to C in a
 
              stamping motion to form a right L-stance toward C, while executing
 
              (half facing) a side downward strike to C with the left backhand
.
         Perform this move in a stamping motion.        

30.  While maintaining a right L-stance toward C, execute (half facing)
 
              a middle front punch to C with the right forefist, punching
 
              the left palm and finger belly, and keeping the right arm straight. 

31.  Move the right foot to C in a stamping motion to form a left L-stance
 
              toward C, while executing (half facing) a side downward strike
 
              
to C with the right backhand.
         Perform this move in a stamping motion. 

32.  While maintaining a left L-stance toward C, execute (half facing)
 
              a middle front punch to C with the left forefist, punching the right palm
               and finger belly, and keeping the left arm straight. 

33.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to D in a stamping
               motion to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing (half facing)
 
              a middle outward strike to D with the left knifehand.
         Perform this move in a stamping motion. 

34.  Slip the left foot to D to form a left walking stance toward D, while executing
 
              (full facing) a high side front strike to D with the right backfist,
 
              striking the left
palm and finger belly with the right elbow. 

35.  Move the right foot to D in a stamping motion to form a left L-stance toward D,
 
              while executing (half facing) a middle outward strike to D
 
              with the right knifehand.
         Perform this move in a stamping motion. 

36.  Slip the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D, while executing
 
              (full facing) a high side front strike to D with the left backfist,
 
              striking the right
palm and finger belly with the left elbow. 

37.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to C to form
 
              a right L-stance toward C, while executing (half facing) low reverse
               guarding block to C with the knifehand.
 

38.  Slip the left foot to C to form a left walking stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a right 9-shape block. 

39.  Move the right foot to C to form a left L-stance toward C, while executing
 
               (half facing) a low guarding block to C the reverse knifehand. 

40.  Slip the right foot to C to form a right walking stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a left 9-shape block. 

41.  Move the right foot to D to form a left walking stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a horizontal strike with a twin knifehand. 

42.  While maintaining a left walking stance toward C, execute (full facing)
 
              a high front strike to C with the right arc-hand. 

43.  Execute a middle front kick to C with the ball of the right foot,
 
              keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 42 above
 
              (a front strike with the right arc-hand). 

44.  Lower the right foot to C to form a right walking stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a high front strike to C with the left arc-hand. 

45.  Execute a middle front kick to C with the ball of the left foot,
 
              keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 44 above
 
              (a front strike with the left arc-hand). 

46.  Lower the left foot to C to form a left walking stance toward C, while
 
              executing (full facing) a middle front punch to C with the right forefist.
         Perform moves 46 and 47 in a fast motion. 

47.  While maintaining a left walking stance toward C, execute (full facing)
 
              a middle front punch to C with the left forefist. 

48.  Bring the right foot to the side of the left foot to form a close stance toward C,
 
              while executing (full facing) a high crescent punch with
 
              a twin foreknuckle fist, with the under fists facing C. 

49.  While pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise,
 
              move the left foot to B to form a left walking stance toward B,
 
              while executing (half facing) a low block to B with the left knifehand. 

50. While maintaining a left walking stance toward B, execute (full facing)
 
              a high front punch to B with the right open fist. 

51.  Move the left foot on the AB line (half a shoulder width toward D and half
 
              a shoulder width toward A).  Then, pivoting on the ball of the left foot and
 
              turning clockwise, move the right foot to A to form a right walking stance
 
              toward A, while executing (half facing) a low block to A
 
              with the right knifehand.
         Perform this move in a spot-turning motion - method one. 

52.  While maintaining a right walking stance toward A, execute (full facing)
 
              a high front punch to A with the left open fist .         
          
 
After completing the last movement, wait one move interval and then shout "Chung-Jang" as though it were a"gi-hap."  Remain in the position of this last move until given the command to return to the ready position (ba-ro). 

END:
When the command to return to the ready position (ba-ro) is given, bring the left foot to the right foot to form a close ready stance type A toward D.  Remain in this stance until given the at-ease command (
swi-eot).
