Pattern History: Chung-Mu [忠武] was
the name given to the great Admiral Yi Sun-sin of the Yi Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armored
battleship (geobukseon) in 1592, which is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this
pattern ends with a left-hand attack is to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality,
checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king. Additional pattern history information.
Number of Movements: 30

Step-by-Step Description of Movements: The
pattern begins when the instructor commands the student to come to attention (cha-ryeot). When given this command, assume an Attention Stance on the X on the AB
line, facing D. This is followed by the instructor stating the pattern that the student will perform (Chung-Mu teul).
On the command to assume the ready position (jun-bi), move the left foot to B to form a Parallel Ready Stance toward D. Remain in this parallel ready stance toward D until given the command
to begin the pattern.
When the command to begin the pattern is given (si-jak), perform the following individual movements in sequence. The pattern should be
performed according to the Guidelines listed in General Choi Hong Hi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, and presented in the section on
essential points
in performing patterns.
1. Move the left foot to B to form a right L-stance toward B, while
executing (half facing)
a twin knifehand block to B.
2. Move the right foot to B to form a right walking stance toward
B, while executing
(full facing) a high front strike to B with the
right knifehand, bringing the left
backhand
in front of the forehead.
3. Pivoting on the ball of the left foot and turning clockwise,
move the right foot to A to form a left L-stance toward A, while executing (half facing) a middle guarding
block to A with the
knifehand.
4. Move the left foot to A to form a left walking stance toward
A, while executing
(full facing) a high front thrust to A with the
left flat fingertip.
5. Move the left foot to D to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing
(half facing) a
middle guarding block to D with the knifehand.
6. Pivot
on the ball of the left foot to form a left bending ready stance type A
(half
facing) toward C, while turning the face toward C.
7. Execute a middle side piercing kick to C with the right footsword.
At the same time,
execute a high side punch to C with the right forefist.
8.
Lower the right foot to C to form a right L-stance toward D, while executing (half
facing) a middle guarding block to D with the knifehand.
9.
Move the ball of the right foot to D, at the side front of the left foot, and then execute a flying side piercing kick to D with the right footsword, while holding
the arms up naturally with
both side fists toward D. Then, land facing toward D to
form a left L-stance toward D, while executing (half
facing) a middle guarding block
to D with the knifehand. Perform this move in a step-jumping motion. 10. Pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise,
move the left
foot to E to form a right L-stance toward E, while executing (half facing) a low
block to E with
the left outer forearm.
11.
Slip the left foot to E to form a left walking stance toward E, while extending
(full facing)
both hands upward as if to grab the opponent's head.
12. Execute an upward kick to E with the right knee, pulling both open
hands downward to the same level as the elbows.
13. Lower the ball of the right foot to the side of the left
foot. Then, while pivoting on the
ball
of the right foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot to F to form a
left walking stance
toward F, while executing (full facing) a high front strike to F with
the right reverse knifehand, bringing the left backhand under the right elbow
joint.
14. Execute a high turning kick to DF with the ball of the right foot,
while holding the arms
up
naturally with both side fists toward DF. Then, lower the ball of the right foot to the
side of the left foot with
the right foot facing F. Perform moves 14 and 15 in a fast motion. 15. Pivoting on the ball of the right foot, execute a middle back piercing kick to F with the
left footsword, while holding the arms up naturally with both side fists toward F.
16. Lower the left foot to F to form a left L-stance toward E, while executing (half facing)
a middle outer forearm guarding block to E.
17.
Execute a middle turning kick to DE with the ball of the left foot, while holding the arms
up naturally
with both side fists toward DE.
18.
Lower the ball of the left foot to the side of the right foot. Then, move the right foot to C
to form a right fixed stance toward C, while executing (half
facing) a U-shape block to
C with reverse knifehands.
19. Jump and spin around counterclockwise, landing on the same spot to form a left L-stance
toward C, while executing (half
facing) a middle knifehand guarding block to C. Perform this move in a jumping motion. 20. Move the left foot to C to form a left walking stance toward C, while executing
(full facing) a low front
thrust to C with the right upset fingertip.
21. Pull the left foot straight toward the right foot to form a right L-stance toward C, while executing (half
facing) a side back strike to D with the right backfist and
a low block to C with the left outer forearm. Perform this move with no balance recovery.
22. Move the right foot to C to form a right walking stance toward C, while
executing (full
facing) a middle front thrust to C with the right straight fingertip, pulling the back
of the left fingertips under the right elbow.
23. Pivoting
on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot
to B to form a left walking stance toward B, while executing (half facing)
a high side block to B with the left double
forearm.
24. Pivoting on the ball of the left foot, move the right foot to B to form a sitting stance toward C, while executing
(full facing) a middle front block to C with the right outer
forearm. Then,
while maintaining a sitting stance toward C, execute (side facing) a high side strike to B with the right backfist. Perform
both of the techniques included in this move at regular speed. 25. Pivoting on the ball of the left foot, execute a middle side piercing kick to A with the right
footsword. At the same time, execute a high side punch to A with the right forefist.
26. Lower the ball of the right foot to A. Then, while pivoting on
the ball of the right foot,
execute
a middle side piercing kick to A with the left footsword. At the same time,
execute a
high side punch to A with the left forefist.
27. Lower
the ball of the left foot to A. Then, while pivoting on the ball of the left foot, move the right foot to B to form a left L-stance toward
B, while executing (half facing)
a checking block to B with an X-knifehand.
28. Move the left foot to B to
form a left walking stance toward B, while executing
(full facing) an upward block to B with a twin palm.
29. Prior to moving the body, move the ball of the left foot on the AB
line (half a
shoulder width toward D and half a shoulder width toward A). Then, while
pivoting on the ball of the left foot and turning clockwise, move the right foot
to A to form a right walking stance toward A, while executing (full facing)
a rising block to
A with the right outer forearm.
Perform this move in a spot-turning motion - method one.
30. While maintaining a right walking stance toward A, execute (full facing) a middle front punch to A with the left forefist.
After completing
the last movement, wait one move interval and then shout "Chung-Mu" as though
it were a "gi-hap." Remain in the position of this last move until given the command to
return to the ready position (ba-ro).
END: When the command to return to the ready position (ba-ro) is given,
bring the left foot back onto the AB line to form a parallel ready stance toward D. Remain in
this stance until given the at-ease command (swi-eot).
