Pattern History

Hwa-Rang 花郎 is named after the Hwarang youth group, which originated in the Silla Dynasty in the early 7th century. The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division, where Taekwon-Do developed into maturity.

Step-by-Step Description of Movements:

The pattern begins when the instructor commands the student to come to attention (cha-ryeot) When given this command, assume an Attention Stance on the X on the AB line, facing D. This is followed by the instructor stating the pattern that the student will perform (Hwa-Rang teul).

On the command to assume the ready position (jun-bi), move the left foot to B to form a Close Ready Stance type C toward D. Remain in this close ready stance type C toward D until given the command to begin the pattern.

When thecommand to begin the pattern is given (si-jak), perform the following individual movements in sequence. The pattern should be performed according to the Guidelines listed in General Choi Hong Hi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, and presented in the section on essential points performing patterns

1.
Move the left foot to B to form a sitting stance toward D, while executing (full facing) a middle side front pushing block to D with the left palm.
2.
While maintaining a sitting stance toward D, execute (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the right forefist.
3.
While maintaining a sitting stance toward D, execute (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the left forefist.
4.
Pivoting on the ball of the left foot, move the right foot to A to form a left L-stance toward A, while executing (half facing) a twin forearm block to A.
5.
While maintaining a left L-stance toward A, execute (half facing) an upward punch to A with the left forefist, pulling the right side fist in front of the left shoulder.
6.
Move the right foot to A to form a right fixed stance toward A in a sliding motion, while executing (half facing) a middle side punch to A with the right forefist.
Perform this move in a sliding motion.
7.
Pull the right foot toward the left foot to form a left vertical stance toward A, while executing (half facing) a side downward strike to A with the right knifehand.
8.
Move the left foot to A to form a left walking stance toward A, while executing (full facing) a middle punch to A with the left forefist.
9.
Move the left foot to D to form a left walking stance toward D, while executing (half facing) a low block to D with the left outer forearm.
10.
Move the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D, while executing (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the right forefist.
11.
Pull the ball of the left foot toward the right foot with both feet (about a half shoulder width apart) facing BD, and with the left heel off of the ground. At the same time, bring the left palm to the right forefist and the left finger belly on the right side fist, while bending the right elbow about 45 degrees outward.
12.
Execute a middle side piercing kick to D with the right footsword, while pulling both hands in the opposite direction to the chest, with the left palm on the right forefist and the left finger belly on the right side fist. Then, lower the right foot to D to form a left L-stance toward D, while executing (half facing) a middle outward side strike to D with the right knifehand.
13.
Move the left foot to D to form a left walking stance toward D, while executing (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the left forefist.
14.
Move the right foot to D to form a right walking stance toward D, at the same time executing (full facing) a middle front punch to D with the right forefist.
15.
Pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot to E to form a right L-stance toward E, while executing (half facing) a middle knifehand guarding block to E.
16.
Move the right foot to E to form a right walking stance toward E, while executing (full facing) a middle front thrust to E with the right straight fingertip, pulling the back of the left fingertips under the right elbow.
17.
Prior to moving the body, move the ball of the right foot on the EF line (about 2/3 shoulder width toward D and 1/2 shoulder width toward F). Then, while pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot to F to form a right L-stance toward F, while executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to F with the knifehand.
Perform this move in a spot-turning motion - method one.
18.
Execute a high turning kick to DF with the ball of the right foot, while holding the arms up naturally with both side fists toward DF. Then lower the ball of the right foot to F.
Perform moves 18 and 19 in a fast motion.
19.
Execute a high turning kick to CF with the ball of the left foot, while holding the arms up naturally with both side fists toward CF. Then, lower the left foot to F to form a right L-stance toward F, while executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to F with the knifehand.
20.
Pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to C to form a left walking stance toward C, while executing (half facing) a low block to C with the left outer forearm.
21.
Pull the left foot straight toward the right foot to form a right L-stance toward C, while executing (half facing) a middle front punch to C with the right forefist.
22.
Move the right foot to C to form a left L-stance toward C, while executing (half facing) a middle front punch to C with the left forefist.
23.
Move the left foot to C to form a right L-stance toward C, at the same time executing (half facing) a middle front punch to C with the right forefist.
24.
Slip the left foot straight to C, pivoting on the ball of the right foot to form a left walking stance toward C, while executing (full facing) a pressing block with an X-fist to C.
Perform this move with no balance recovery.
25.
Move the right foot to C in a sliding motion to form a right L-stance toward D, while thrusting (half facing) to C with the right side elbow.
Perform this move in a sliding motion.
26.
Pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise, bring the left foot to the side of the right foot to form a close stance toward B, while executing (full facing) a high side front block to B with the right inner forearm, extending the left forearm to the side-downward.
27.
While maintaining a close stance toward B, execute (full facing) a high side front block to B with the left inner forearm, extending the right forearm to the side-downward.
28.
While pivoting on the ball of the right foot, move the left foot to B to form a right L-stance toward B, at the same time executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to B with the knifehand.
29.
Bring the ball of the left foot to the side of the right foot facing D. Then, move the right foot to A to form a left L-stance toward A, while executing (half facing) a middle guarding block to A with the knifehand.

After completing the last movement, wait one move interval and then shout " Hwa-Rang " as though it were a "gi-hap." Remain in the position of this last move until given the command to return to the ready position (ba-ro).
