Practice Level
This pattern is practiced by the 5th Dan Black Belt
in preparation for their testing for 6th Dan Black Belt

Korean Pronunciation:

        Se-Jong teul

Pattern History: Se-Jong is named after the greatest Korean King, Se-Jong, who invented the Korean alphabet (han-geul) in 1443, and he was also a noted meteorologist.  The pattern diagram is in the shape of the Chinese character () for king, representing King Se-Jong, while the 24 movements refer to the 24 letters of the Korean alphabet.

Number of Movements:  24

Pattern Diagram:

Se-Jong

Step-by-Step Description of Movements:

The pattern begins when the instructor commands the student to come to attention (cha-ryeot).  When given this command, assume an Attention Stance on the X on the AB line, facing D.  This is followed by the instructor stating the pattern that the student will perform (Se-Jong teul).

On the command to assume the ready position (jun-bi), move the left foot to B to form a Close Ready Stance type B toward D.  Remain in this close ready stance type B toward D until given the command to begin the pattern.

When the command to begin the pattern is given (si-jak), perform the following individual movements in sequence.  The pattern should be performed according to the guidelines listed in the section on essential points in performing patterns.

1.    Move the left foot to B to form a left walking stance toward B, while executing (half facing)
a low block to B with the left outer forearm.

2.    Bring the ball of the left foot to the side of the right foot, then move the right foot to A to form
a left L-stance toward A, while executing (half facing) a twin forearm block.

3.    Pivoting on the ball of the left foot, execute a middle side piercing kick to D with the right
footsword.  At the same time, execute a high side punch to D with the right forefist.

4.    Lower the ball of the right foot to D, then move the left foot to F to form a left walking stance
toward F, while executing (full facing) a rising block with the left outer forearm.

Bring the ball of the left foot to the side of the right foot, then move the right foot to E
to form a sitting stance toward D, while executing (side facing) a middle side strike
to E with the right knifehand.

6.    Bring the right foot to the side of the left foot, to form a (full facing) close ready stance
             type B toward D.

7.    Move the left foot toward D in a jumping motion (about one and a half shoulder widths),
landing to form a left X-stance toward DG, while executing (half facing) a high
side strike to D with the left backfist, bringing the right finger belly to the left side fist.
Perform this move in a jumping motion.

8.    Move the right foot to G to form a right walking stance toward G, while executing a
             (full facing)
a high front punch to G with the right forefist.

9.    Prior to moving the body, move the ball of the right foot on the GH line (half a shoulder width
toward D and half a shoulder width toward H).  Then, while pivoting on the ball of the right
foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot to H to form a left fixed stance
toward H, while executing (half facing) a high guarding block to H with the outer forearm.

Perform this move in a spot-turning motion - method one.

10.    Move the right foot to H to form a right walking stance toward H, while executing

13.   Execute a middle turning kick to C with the ball of the left foot, while holding the
arms up naturally with both side fists toward C.

14.   Lower the left foot to C in a jumping motion, landing to form a left X-stance toward CF,
while executing (half facing) a high block to C with the left double forearm.

Perform this move in jumping motion.

15.
Move the right foot to F to form a sitting stance toward C, while extending
(full facing) the right fist horizontally to C.

(full facing) a pressing block to C with the right palm.
Perform this move in a slow motion – sliding the left foot.

Pull the left instep to the hollow of the right leg to form a right one-leg stance toward C,
while executing (full facing) a high side front strike to C with the right back fist, striking
the left finger belly with the right back forearm.

22.   Lower the left foot to C, turning clockwise to form a right fixed stance toward D, while
thrusting (half facing) to C with the left side elbow.
